The class

What is hot pilates at Protea?

A full-body mat class that pairs Pilates with high-intensity intervals, taught in the studio's heated room.

Barb Gladney introduced Heated Mat Pilates at Protea Movement Studio as a class that works on core strength, endurance and mobility in a single session, with attention to how you breathe and move. It is a demanding class, and most students leave having worked up a real sweat.

Like every class at the studio, it stays small, so instructors can give personal attention and adjust for where you are. Beginners and experienced students share the same room.

What makes it different

Why does breathwork matter in hot pilates?

Steady breathing helps you manage the pace of a fast class, and it connects Hot Pilates to the yoga practice at the center of the studio.

Hot Pilates works on strength, endurance and cardio together, which is a large part of its popularity. Celeste McCarthy, who founded the studio in 2024, points to what often gets overlooked: using your breath to move deeper, build awareness and quiet the mental noise.

Breath is also what ties the class back to the rest of the studio, where breath-centered movement runs through yoga, barre and mat pilates alike.

A sustainable practice

Should hot pilates be your only workout?

Most students do better with a mix. Hot Pilates works well as the demanding part of a week that also includes slower, mobility-focused and restorative classes.

Intensity

Hot Pilates and yoga sculpt

Strength, endurance and cardio, for the days you want to work hard.

Flow

Yoga, vinyasa and barre

Different ways to build mobility, balance and control, with breath leading the movement.

Recovery

Stretch, sound baths and yoga nidra

Slower classes that make room for rest and recovery between harder sessions.

Our instructors recommend combining styles and balancing intensity with recovery to build a practice you can keep up. See every class at Protea Movement Studio
